The Duchess of Cornwall at the Swindon Art Gallery
The Duchess of Cornwall told our correspondent yesterday that her favourite art is “modern British”, that is 20th century. She was visiting Swindon, to mark the publication of the Public Catalogue Foundation’s latest volume, on Gloucestershire and Wiltshire. Swindon Art Gallery is in cramped premises (and looking for a more suitable home), but despite its low profile it owns one of the finest regional collections of modern British painting. On show for the first time is the back of its 1943 Lowry, which is normally hidden; the reverse of the panel has a picture of a family group, dating from more than 20 years earlier. Just as the Duchess was saying her goodbyes she was told that three quarters of the collection remains in store. She immediately asked for a quick peek, delaying her return to London.
